Angiography

Angiography is a medical procedure used to visualize the blood vessels in the body. It involves injecting a contrast agent, or dye, into the bloodstream and using medical imaging equipment to create detailed images of the blood vessels.

Angiography is commonly used to diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions, including heart disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. In this article, we will provide you with everything you need to know about angiography.

What Is Angiography?

Angiography is a medical imaging procedure that allows doctors to see the blood vessels in the body. During the procedure, a contrast agent is injected into the bloodstream through a small catheter, which is typically inserted into the groin or arm. The contrast agent helps to highlight the blood vessels, making them visible on X-ray, CT, or MRI scans.

There are several types of angiography, including:

  • Coronary angiography : used to visualize the blood vessels in the heart
  • Cerebral angiography : used to visualize the blood vessels in the brain
  • Peripheral angiography : used to visualize the blood vessels in the arms or legs
  • Pulmonary angiography : used to visualize the blood vessels in the lungs

Why Is Angiography Performed?

Angiography is performed for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Diagnosing heart disease, stroke, or peripheral artery disease
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of previous treatments or procedures
  • Identifying blockages or narrowing in the blood vessels
  • Planning for surgery or other medical procedures

Angiography can also be used to treat certain medical conditions. For example, a doctor may use angiography to guide the placement of a stent, a small mesh tube that is inserted into a blood vessel to help keep it open.

What Happens During an Angiography Procedure?

Before the procedure, your doctor will give you instructions on how to prepare. You may need to fast for several hours before the procedure and stop taking certain medications. Your doctor will also perform a physical exam and review your medical history to ensure that angiography is the right procedure for you.

During the procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area where the catheter will be inserted. A small incision will be made, and the catheter will be inserted into a blood vessel in your groin or arm. The contrast agent will be injected through the catheter, and X-ray, CT, or MRI images will be taken to visualize the blood vessels.

After the procedure, the catheter will be removed, and pressure will be applied to the insertion site to stop any bleeding. You will be monitored for several hours to ensure that there are no complications.
